Across the XXX signals and cultural shifts mapped for this report, three patterns emerge, not as parallel trends competing for attention, but as forces operating at different levels. Pattern 1 tracks how people relate to scent: the cultural contract guiding choice. Pattern 2 tracks how scent is made and sold: the industry's underlying business model and supply chain. Pattern 3 tracks how scent acts on the body: the physiological relationship between fragrance and the person wearing it. Together, they describe a category that is completely redefining itself, at the level of meaning, infrastructure, and biology simultaneously.

PATTERN 1: IDENTITY FRAGMENTATION 
From signature scent to scent wardrobe to scent moment

The cultural contract around fragrance has shifted from "find your signature" to "which me today?" driven by emotional descriptors, social codes, gender expression, and aesthetic subcultures rather than perfume pyramid literacy. Where you are, who you're with, and how you feel dictate your fragrance choice.

PATTERN 2: PROGRAMMABLE OLFACTION
Scent as a system and a software
Fragrance is shifting from finished goods to modular systems (bases + enhancers, projections, cartridges + platforms, prompts + outputs) becoming AI-generated, algorithm-recommended, and device-delivered rather than bottle-bound. Control over the final scent is moving from the perfumer's formula to the point of consumption: brands now sell platforms and components, while the user (or the algorithm) assembles the actual fragrance in real time.

PATTERN 3: SCENT AS BIOMETRIC INTERFACE
Reading and regulating the body
Scent is being repositioned as a physiological response system, whether that's microbiome-matched formulas, stress-triggered diffusion, or brainwave-mapped blends. Scent also acts back on the body to modify physiological states (regulating sleep cycles, anchoring focus, triggering relaxation responses, or priming the body for performance).

These three scenarios are not single-pattern projections. Each one is led by a dominant pattern, but all three patterns are present in every scenario to varying degrees. The three time horizons are not evenly spaced for convenience — each reflects how far its scenario's dominant pattern is from being technically and culturally ready. Identity fragmentation is already underway in consumer behaviour today, so Scenario 1’s 2030 horizon assumes only the infrastructure catches up to a behaviour that already exists. Five years out is enough time for at-home synthesis devices to move from early-adopter novelty to bathroom-counter normal.
Biometric scent regulation is real at the research and wellness-device level today, but reliably reading physiological signals and translating them into trustworthy, real-time scent decisions requires more sensor and AI maturity to feel dependable rather than gimmicky, Scenario 2’s 2035 horizon gives that technology a full product-maturity cycle.

Programmable olfaction, in Scenario 3's full form, depends on the most infrastructure: scent fully decoupled from a physical bottle, encoded, transmitted, and socially calibrated via autonomous delivery, this requires not just better technology but a genuine cultural shift in what counts as fragrance at all, which is why it sits furthest out, in 2040.

FragStudio is a personal blending app paired with a domestic scent synthesis device. The user composes a formula from a library of accords; the app sends it to the device, which combines pre-loaded raw materials to produce the blend on demand.
  • Form: matte black countertop device, bathroom-sited, paired with a companion app

    Input: user-composed formula, built from a note/accord library organised by scent family, refined through emotional/narrative cues rather than technical ones
  • Interface: phone app as the composition surface; device as the production surface

PARIS, 2030. A THURSDAY IN JULY
1.50pm
He finds himself a bench in a little square, not too far from his office in the 9th arrondissement, having just finished his lunch nearby. He checks the FragStudio note library on his phone, scrolling through accords arranged by scent family. He's been building the blend in his head since this morning. He remembered her comment from their last date about her grandmother's garden. How it had so much aromatic basil, so basil always reminded her of that. The remark had come after she’d instinctively poked her nose into the Caprese salad on the table, only to laugh and apologise with a smile.
He scrolls past the obvious choices. He'd already decided on the base: a musk he wears under everything else, a trusty foundation. He’s been looking forward to his trip to Sicily next month with friends, so he’s had Mediterranean summer scents on his mind. The bergamot comes first, then a little grapefruit. For the middle, the virtual assistant suggests a jasmine accord, then violet leaf, a touch of sage. Green, fresh, nothing that would offend a room in this heat. And then the reason for the whole exercise: the basil accord, which fits twice over: once for her, once for the version of himself that's already halfway to Catania.
FragStudio suggests a ratio. He adjusts it slightly, trusting his nose over the algorithm. The formula is confirmed and sent to the device at home, a matte black machine sitting on his bathroom counter, pre-loaded with essential oils and synthetics ― the same logic as a 3D printer, the formula tells it what to combine from what's already inside ― which will have it prepared by the time he gets back.
7.48pm
The city hasn't cooled much. He applies the blend once to the neck before leaving his flat, the window open. From below: the ethereal hum of an electric bus pulling away, a group of people spilling out of a bar, laughing, the sound rising warm through the summer air.
On the way to the restaurant he passes a man trailing something too dense and gourmand for summer, the kind of fragrance that announces itself uninvited. He doesn't judge it. Years ago he probably wore something similar in this weather.
She's already at the table when he arrives. He chose the restaurant for its atmosphere ― bread, white wine, subtly chilled air. She looks up, says hello. Then, a second later, after he sits down, a micro-expression crosses her face and a curious look in her eyes. The glint of someone reaching for a memory they can't quite place.
They order, they talk. The evening goes well.
